100 itineraries in Nothern Alsace
Alsace - a small region with an extensive choice of trails
The Alsatian network of trails is constantly growing. Its itineraries take you across two regional nature parks and from one heritage site to another.
The Freycinet-gauge canals, built between 1834 and 1866, form one of the oldest networks of routes. The GR® 53-5, which opened in 1892 and which is signposted with a red rectangle, makes it possible to cross the Vosges mountains from north to south. More recently, in 2004, the TMV® Vosges Mountains mountain bike trail was marked out by the Ligue d’Alsace de Cyclotourisme. And finally, in 2014, construction of the long-distance cycle route Véloroute Rhin, which is part of the EuroVelo 15 cycle route along the Rhine, was completed. This 1.320 km route is the first European cycle route to have ECF (European Cyclists’ Federation) certification for its entire itinerary.
This intricate, well-maintained network of waterways, trails and signposted footpaths offers both long-distance and circular itineraries, as well as many leisurely strolls or rides. Whatever itinerary you choose, you will always find a choice of welcoming gîtes and places to eat. As you cross ridges, climb peaks and drop down the hillside vineyards into the Rhine valley, you will discover many a memorable site from castles and abbeys to picturesque villages and Medieval towns.
